One of the things I love most about Shark Fin Cove is how much variety it offers in a relatively small area. At the top of the cliffs, you'll find sweeping views of the California coastline along Highway 1 and rolling coastal grasses that catch beautiful golden light at sunset. A short (but steep) hike leads down to the beach, where the sandy beach, hole in the rock, and the iconic shark fin rock create an entirely different atmosphere.
For couples looking for an adventurous-feeling Northern California coastal elopement location without a full-day hike, Shark Fin Cove is an ideal Northern California elopement location. You could spend all day there, but a morning or evening elopement experience would be perfect at this location. It strikes a wonderful balance. You can experience multiple landscapes while still keeping the experience relaxed, simple, and accessible.
It's also conveniently located near Santa Cruz and within driving distance of the San Francisco Bay Area, making it a great option for couples who want a stunning coastal backdrop without venturing too far from home. Shark Fin Cove offers a setting that feels intimate, scenic, and undeniably Californian.
What a Shark Fin Cove Elopement Could Look Like
One of the best parts about a Shark Fin Cove elopement day is that there are no rules! Eloping is inherently nontraditional, and you have the freedom to step outside of expectations.
Your day doesn't have to follow a traditional timeline. There isn’t a checklist you’re supposed to follow or a way this is ‘meant’ to look. Instead, your elopement can be built around the moments and experiences that feel meaningful to you.
Imagine starting the day slowly at a cozy Airbnb along the California coast or in Santa Cruz. You share coffee together, make waffles (“and in the mornin, I’m makin’ WAFFLES”), and soak in the excitement of what’s ahead.
You can spend the later afternoon getting ready together and then make your way to the cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The wind moves through the coastal grasses as you exchange private vows with the ocean stretching endlessly behind you.

Exploring the Cliffs and Beach at Shark Fin Cove
One of my favorite things about photographing at Shark Fin Cove is how many unique backdrops exist within a single location.
The cliffs above the beach provide sweeping ocean views and beautiful coastal grasses that add movement and texture to photographs. During this February workshop, we began the session here, taking advantage of the open landscape and dramatic coastline.
The first time I stood on the cliffs overlooking the ocean here, I found myself wanting to stay awhile longer. To listen to the waves. To watch the wind move through the grasses. To soak in the kind of beauty that reminds you there is no prize for rushing through life.
Maybe that's part of why I think it makes such a meaningful place to elope. It naturally invites you to slow down and be present with one another. A truly stunning backdrop for Shark Fin Cove wedding photos or an intimate elopement.
From there, we made our way down to the beach below. The descent is short and steep but rewards you with an entirely different perspective of the cove. Be prepared for the hike down to take a little time. Even though the distance is short, it is steep and caution is recommended. No need to rush - you’ll get there when you get there!
One of the standout features at Shark Fin Cove is the natural hole-in-the-rock formation that has become a favorite subject for photographers and visitors alike. Combined with the towering shark fin rock and the rugged shoreline, it creates a landscape that feels both dramatic and intimate.

Things to Know Before Planning a Shark Fin Cove Elopement
If you're considering Shark Fin Cove for your elopement, here are a few things worth keeping in mind:
Parking. Parking for Shark Fin Cove is limited along Highway 1 with a small, unpaved pull-off area near the trailhead.
Expect wind. This is the California coast, after all. Weather can change quickly. Layers, flexible hairstyles, and embracing the elements will go a long way.
Check the tides. Access to certain parts of the beach can vary depending on tide conditions, so planning ahead is important.
Be prepared for a short hike. Reaching the beach requires walking down a trail from the parking area. Cliffs can be unstable in places—stay back from edges and be mindful of shifting terrain.
Plan for changing weather. Coastal conditions can shift quickly throughout the day. Sunny skies can become foggy and cool in a matter of hours.
