Some places naturally ask you to slow down. The California redwoods are one of them.

The air feels softer. The light filters through the trees in quiet little pieces. Everything gets still enough that you can actually feel what’s happening around you. The forest feels like a deep exhale. That’s part of what makes a Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park elopement feel so special.

For couples who want a wedding day that feels grounded, intimate, and deeply connected to nature. Eloping in the California redwoods can be such a beautiful way to come back to what really matters - being present with each other and honoring your love in a way that feels calm.

Emily and Josh’s redwoods elopement felt earthy, calm, and full of quiet meaning. They exchanged their vows beneath the redwood trees - surrounded by the kind of stillness only the forest can offer.

One of my favorite things about this day was how grounded it felt.

There was no pressure to perform. No rush to move through moment after moment. Just the quiet unfolding of being together in a place that already held so much beauty on its own.

Emily and Josh exchanged vows underneath the towering redwoods, surrounded by soft light and the steady hush of the forest. It felt intimate in the truest sense. Not because it was elaborate or dramatic, but because it gave them space to exist with each other.

And honestly, that’s what I love so much about elopements like this.

They make room. Room to breathe before your vows, or to laugh when the nerves settle in. Room to hold hands, take each other in, and be present for a day that you’ll remember dearly instead of rushing through.

That’s what the California redwoods do so well. They hold space for cherished experiences without asking for much in return (only that we take good care of them).

Emily’s gown brought softness and movement that looked so beautiful against the texture of the forest. Josh’s suit grounded everything in a timeless and classic way. Their florals added an organic, earthy touch that fit the setting so naturally, and every piece of the day felt connected to the landscape instead of competing with it.

Simplicity and beauty, grounded in the forest.

Located in the Santa Cruz Mountains, Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park is easily accessible and a peaceful place for couples who want to experience nature away from the city. No strenuous hiking required. Just you two strolling through winding trails beneath the redwood trees.

There’s a reason so many couples are drawn to the forest when they start dreaming about an elopement.

It’s not just beautiful — though obviously, it is. It’s the feeling of it.

The redwoods have this quiet, grounding energy. The kind of calm that you feel in your bones. An environment where moments feel softer. More intentional. Less performative. And for a lot of couples, that’s exactly the kind of location they are craving for their elopement day.

A place where they can breathe.

A place where they can feel.

A place where the day doesn’t have to be loud to be unforgettable.

That’s what a California redwood forest elopement can offer.

It’s such a dream if you care about your wedding day feeling less like a production and more like an experience. And for couples who feel overwhelmed by the idea of a big traditional wedding, the California redwoods can be a grounding place for their elopement day.

One of the things I care most about when photographing elopements is helping couples create space to actually feel the day while they’re in it.

Yes, I want your photos to be beautiful, but I also want them to feel like memories.

That’s why my approach is always a blend of candid moments and gentle guidance. Enough direction so you never feel awkward or unsure of what to do, but enough room for things to unfold naturally and honestly, too.

Because the best images usually come from the moments that were actually lived.

Planning Your Own Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park Elopement?

If you’re dreaming about a wedding day that feels a little slower, a little softer, and a lot more intentional, eloping in the California redwoods can be such a beautiful way to do things differently. Here are a few things to keep in mind for your elopement day.

Check the park details ahead of time

Any time you’re planning an elopement in a public outdoor space, it’s a good idea to check the official park website for current information about access, hours, closures, and general visitor details.

You can find additional information on the parks website here https://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=546

A little planning ahead can make a huge difference in helping the day feel smooth and relaxed.

Look into permits if needed

If you’re planning to exchange vows in the park and bring in vendors like a photographer, florist, or hair and makeup artist, it’s always worth checking ahead to see whether a permit is required for your specific plans.

Every location is a little different, and making sure you have the right information ahead of time can help you feel way more at ease going into the day.

For weddings and special events, you can contact the park at (831) 335-6324 or email mtnspecevent@parks.ca.gov

Choose a quieter time if you want a more intimate feel

If privacy matters to you, weekday mornings or later afternoons can often feel especially peaceful in a place like this.

That can be such a beautiful option if you want your vows or portraits to feel a little more tucked away and personal.

Keep it simple

One of the best things about eloping in the redwoods is that you really don’t need much.

A bouquet. A vow book. Clothes that feel like you. A few meaningful details.

Maybe your people or maybe just each other.

That’s enough. Truly

The forest already brings so much presence and beauty to the experience. You don’t have to overfill the day for it to matter.

California Redwoods Elopement Packing List

If you’re planning to elope in the forest, a few thoughtful things can help you feel more comfortable and present throughout the day.

A few things I’d recommend bringing:

  •     Comfortable shoes for walking
  •     Vow books or printed vows
  •     Water and light snacks
  •     A layer in case the forest feels cool or damp
  •     A small bag for touch-ups or personal items
  •     Any permit or reservation details you may need
  •     Bug spray
  •     Florals or details that feel organic and true to the setting

And if you’re in the “I know I want something different, I’m just trying to figure out what that looks like” stage, I’d love to help you dream it up. Here’s how!
